From the silver screen to the stage

By: Baylea Bruce @baylea_marie [Yearbook Editor]

Going to class, auditioning for plays, falling in love with the new girl, and randomly breaking out in song and dance about sticking to the status quo is a typical day at East High, the high school in the very popular Disney movie, High School Musical. The movie follows the epic love story between Gabrielle, the geeky new girl, and Troy, the star basketball player. The two shatter the very fabric of high school reality when they make callbacks for the musical. This famed story will be acted out on our very stage, the musical form of High School Musical.

David Gorman, junior, will be playing one of the lead roles as Troy. Gorman has had to work extra hard to get into character. He has the love for singing, but the basketball star doesn’t come as naturally to him. “I’m the complete opposite of a sports person. What I’ve done so far is ask my character questions that define his life like who he is, who is his family, and how they affect him,” said Gorman. However, Gorman does have some basketball experience from eighth grade, but didn’t continue after that.

Playing the Gabrielle to Gorman’s Troy is Erin Thomason, senior. While Thomason is happy to be playing Gabrielle, she didn’t specifically set her sights on the shy girl. “I auditioned for all the parts. It’s fun to finish off my senior year playing a lead role,” said Thomason. The lead role is well deserved, Thomason has participated in all four musicals. “It’s really fun to start the musical from scratch and put it all together,” said Thomason.

While many of the members of the cast are excited for the production, there is one subject that everyone has a different take on. Is the movie or the musical better? “I like the movie better. The musical has some weird lines in it and no one can replace the original cast. But I do like the added songs in the musical,” said Isabelle Weber, senior, who plays Sharpay. “One thing that is better with the on stage version is there’s more songs. No songs are taken away, just added,” said Gorman.

So even if you’ve seen the movie a thousand times or you’ve never even heard of it, the production of High School Musical will put a new spin on the old classic. Production dates are April 14th-16th. Tickets are almost sold out, so email [email protected] with how many tickets are needed and for what night.
