Marion lends a helping hand

By: Tylar Jansen, Activities Editor

She grabs a paper ornament off the giving tree at her church. She picks a family who needs some clothes and food for the holidays.  She can’t wait to get started and give a family a happy holiday.

Ms. Elizabeth Fowler, a Spanish teacher here at Marion, is a mentor leader who can’t wait to get started on Marion’s holiday giving project. “I believe that every mentor is given one family and the teacher and students go out and get stuff for the family,” she said. “Things that are needed go from canned food to clothes and maybe even small gifts for younger children.” Every mentor group has their own separate family but all have the same goal.

Ms. Fowler has donated her time before with charity. “I did a giving tree once at my church,” she explained. “My ornament had a family of a mother and son and I just got them clothes and other supplies like food.” She said that doing this made her feel really good to know that she had helped make a family have a better holiday.

About the giving project here at Marion, Ms. Fowler said that she is all for it. “I think it’s a very cool idea. Mentor groups will bond more and the kids will feel amazing when they see how happy they made that family,” she smiled. “I also think it will help students here build even more character than they already have.” Ms. Fowler said she’s very excited to see how everything turns out.

She’s helping a student wrap a present for the family. Ms. Fowler and her mentor students are bonding together to help a less fortunate family get a happy holiday just by giving a little of their time.
