Shortened classes cause frusteration

By: Kylie McAllister [Yearbook Executive Editor]

Because of the many unplanned early outs due to the heat, most teachers are having a hard time fitting in all of their lesson plans during the shortened classes. Teachers have to make their lessons short, sweet, and to the point. Homework becomes an overload for students because they don’t have time to work on it in class.

Ms. Ramaekers, science teacher, does not have a hard time fitting in all her lesson plans. “Since I do not plan out classes that far in advance and don’t have different activities for the student’s to do to every five minutes like some teachers do, it is not that hard for me to adjust,” explained Ms. Ramaekers. While she fits in everything that the students need to learn sometimes she can’t show as many example problems and discuss every concept thoroughly that she teaches. On the other hand, Mrs. Johnson has a hard time fitting everything in. “It is difficult to feel like you are moving forward with the material,” said Mrs. Johnson. She is not able to complete her lessons on time while Ms. Ramaekers can. “Students get all the stuff in but we don’t do as many example problems in class and so homework is a little more difficult for them,” said Ms. Ramaekers. Students have to spend more time on homework and they have to come in early in the morning to get extra help.

The students and the teachers have a lot of extra free time because of the early outs. Ms. Ramaekers often stays at the school to work on things until 4pm-5pm on the early out days. “I liked the first two early outs,” mentioned Ms. Ramaekers. Now she is getting really tired of them. Today she is going to go home and take a nap.

While some teachers are having a hard time fitting everything Ms. Ramaekers is not worried.
