The ball was served and she was low and ready. Ready to pass the ball to target then run outside to hit. The pass was there, she ran outside, the ball was set and she hammered it down the line. A point for Marion followed by many others.
Emi Banes, freshmen, plays freshmen volleyball for Marion. She is an outside hitter that plays all the way around. Every player has a favorite part of the game and Emi is no different, “[I like] hitting and just playing the game,” she said. Freshmen volleyball is about learning and playing the game and getting better every play.
The freshmen, sophomore, and varsity all played at Williamsburg last night against Williamsburg. Each grade level ended up winning their games. The freshmen won their first two. They then played an extra game that doesn’t count, which they lost. “I thought we did pretty good, but we probably could of done better. We should of won the last game, but we were just messing around too much,” Emi explained. Even though they lost the last game, they played together and won the games that counted.
The season is going great for the freshmen. They are learning a lot about the game and getting better every game. “We have done pretty great [this season] so far and I think that we can only get better,” Emi said with a smile. They are all getting used to their new coach and new teammates. Emi feels they have it in them to keep improving and becoming a great team together.
The score is 24 to 20. They only need one more point to win the match. The ball is set and Emi is on the outside waiting for it. She sees it coming and takes off and hits it at her max height. The point goes to Marion! They have won the match!
