Imagine fighting in the championship game to win it all, and then losing because people didn’t try hard enough and didn’t train in the off-season. All of that work in one game, just to get beaten by people who trained more and worked harder. This has become a reality for many people, but why? If only people would actually want to put some effort in, so they can get a good outcome and win more. This has become very surprising with the number of students wanting to get more involved in sports. In the United States as a whole, there has been significant growth in the number of student-athletes and children who want to play sports at an early age. As of 2025, there was a record-breaking number of over 8,000,000 participants in high school sports, ranging from swimming to lacrosse to ice hockey. It seems like there really is a sport for everyone. But one aspect that many people seem to forget about is the time they should be training in the off-season if they want to see real improvements and grow as an athlete. Whether it is meal prepping or working on their footwork in their free time, there is something to be said about how an athlete should train in the off-season and the impact it can have on their future.
With all of the components that go into building up a good athlete, one would think that they need a good program to go off of, and the high school just happens to have that. The off-season lifting program has been around for quite some time now and is thriving. With students from many different sports getting involved, people are able to see how helpful it is for their game. Mr. VonBehren, PE teacher, has worked at the high school for 20 years and has had a front-row seat to the growth of this program. From what started as after-school training where the main crowd was football players, it has now evolved into a space where all different types of students feel safe to come and maintain a healthy workout routine. Participants can lift in groups or on their own, and the end goal is to improve their overall well-being and better their lifelong health. Through this program, athletes have been able to see development in strength, endurance, and a reduction in the likelihood of injury. If participants choose not to train in the off-season, it is expected to cause problems. “They enter their seasons undertrained and much more injury-prone. They are much more sore as they begin their seasons. The body simply isn’t prepared and conditioned for the amount of stress that is placed on it,” said VonBehren. This shows how preparing the body and training to use muscles that aren’t normally used is the best option, so it doesn’t cause issues down the road.
When it comes to training in the off-season, there are various tasks one can do, b ut it’s ultimately based on what they need to work on, and also the sport they are involved in. Some of the areas they might focus on could include stretching muscles, strengthening their mental stamina, preventing injuries, building up a good nutrition program, and toning in on a good strength and conditioning plan. The countless hours of training and growing as a competitor have really been shown to enhance the game for an athlete and show improvements in results. Nathan Bryant, sophomore, has played football for three years now and enjoys staying physically active. Once he saw how important the game is to him, he started to focus more on how he could get better. This includes meal planning, lifting weights, and mentally preparing himself for the upcoming season. Through the off-season program, Bryant has been able to achieve many accomplishments and has also found a family in it. “When I’m in the school weight room, I get to experience team bonding, rather than when I work out alone,” said Bryant. This has become apparent for many students who are able to gain friendships while also improving their physical health.
As the number of student-athletes continues to grow, there is no doubt that many of them are going to discover the importance of enhancing their athletic abilities and try to create a better, healthier life. The focus that needs to be put on working in the off-season is no joke and should really be taken more seriously. Because no athlete wants to go into their season unprepared, sore, and worried about injuries. There’s only one life for each of us to live, so why doesn’t everyone stay active and just choose to create a holistic lifestyle worth living?
