Eyes on the prize

By: Naomi Spence, Staff Writer

The clock tics ever so slowly and it seems like it would counterclockwise it tried hard enough. The teacher keeps droning on about who knows what topic that obviously has nothing to do with what the syllabus said.

These are the times when focus is a commodity. Of coarse it comes easily when your stalking somebody on Facebook or trying to make the most delicious sandwich ever or anything else that holds no importance or responsibility. No of course not, it has to be the huge and very important paper that is the main grade in a class or that project that is required to be completed portion by portion every single day. What is it that makes these tasks so much more difficult than completing the basic things that are sure to get done everyday that may take about the same amount of concentration? The thing that sets these tasks apart and makes the time frame for one much longer than the other ladies and gentlemen is will power. Focus, probably the thing in school most often taught and the least often learned. It is what made all the greats from Oprah to Bill Gates what they are today. It is what keeps the rich, rich and the poor still struggling to keep food on the table or stay in school. It is a trait that hard to come buy and even rarer to come by in areas that will result in success. Focus could do you wonders if put into constructive things like math and reading or any type of learning at all but it can also be one of the most corrosive powers when it is invested in things like drugs or even a persistent habit of playing angry birds at all hours of the day.

Though trying to stay focused at times (especially in certain classes) can feel like pulling teeth, just try to focus is the closet thing there is for a key to success. Try to pay attention in class even though most teachers have absolutely no respect for the syllabuses.
