Inspirational, hard working, and happy are three words Lyndsey Wheeler, ‘19, used to describe her brother Brett Wheeler, ‘18. Brett is 100% blind and is currently on his way to becoming the first blind Zumba/Zumba Gold fitness instructor in the US. “I want to teach Zumba so I can teach people who have no dancing experience,” said Brett Wheeler.
Wheeler is becoming certified in Zumba and Zumba Gold on March 10, 2018. They are also raising money for his training, and his trip to the Zumba Convention this summer in Orlando, Florida. A few people are hosting a Zumbathon on January 28, 2018 at the downtown HGN YMCA from 11:30-1pm. The cost is $10 for adults or $5 for anyone with a student or veteran ID.
Zumba is a Latin dance that was created in the 90’s. Zumba is normally done in groups of people being lead by an instructor. Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic music. Each week about 15 million people take a Zumba class.
Brett will be the first blind Zumba in the United States. Take a trip to the YMCA on 7th st. on January 28th. There will be DJ for the event, a djembe drum player, and some souvenirs for participants.
