The Homecoming dance is fastly approaching, and people are making their plans for pictures and dinner before the dance begins. Some will not be able to participate in the before Homecoming activities because they will be at sports tournaments. The volleyball team has a tournament the day of homecoming, as they have in years past.
Johanna Steggall, senior, is on the varsity volleyball team and will have to arrive to Homecoming late again this year. Steggall finds it difficult to have a tournament all day, and then go to the dance. “We are always late to the dance and we aren’t as focused on the game. We end up playing badly because we just want to get to the dance,” Steggall explained. The volleyball has their biggest tournament of the year at Jefferson on the day of Homecoming. After the team gets done with their tournament they have barely any time to get ready. “Some of us went out to dinner after the dance last year, and we leave our hair wet or else it would waste time,” Steggall said. Not only is it disappointing that they have to show up late, but it also makes it worse if they lose. “When we lose it affects our whole team, and it makes Homecoming less exciting,” Steggall explained.
Mr. Dave Messerli agrees, finding that it is hard for the girls to get ready, and still get the full Homecoming experience. “It is very difficult when another school has a specific date set for a competition, and it is hard for teams to remove themselves from it,” explained Messerli. He finds that is easier if the boys have a tournament on Homecoming day because they don’t take a lot of time to get ready, but it is harder for the girls to get ready in a short amount of time.
As Homecoming gets closer and closer, the volleyball team hopes that they will be able to stay focused during their biggest tournament of the year, and have a great time at homecoming even if they have to show up late.
