Taking charge for today’s youth

By: Emily Palmer, Feature Editor

The little second grader raises his hand to answer the question, what happens when you are subjected to second hand smoke. She smiles because he answered the question correctly. This is just another day when she gets to educate young children on the effects of drugs and alcohol.

Savanna Wolfe, junior, has been in Take Charge since her freshman year. She loves, “Teaching young kids about the effects that drugs and alcohol have on people.” Wolfe explains that the Take Charge group has meetings in the mornings and sometimes during lunch. At those lunchtime meetings the students get pizza, “It is always great because we get free pizza!” exclaimed Wolfe. Although the pizza is good that is not her favorite part.

“I love Take Charge because I get to help children learn about staying away from harmful things and I get to help them learn,” Wolfe said with a smile. Just the other day the Take Charge students attended an all day conference. They had a tobacco 101, an alcohol 101, a prescription drug 101 and street marketing classes. “It was cool,” stated Wolfe.

Now that she is all the more educated she can get out there and better teach today’s young children. She walks up and introduces herself. With a large smile she begins to teach what she was taught.
