#Twitter drama

Skylar Miller-Baker @Skylarmbaker15 [Staff Writer]

We all know the exciting social media site Twitter. A lot of students have a Twitter account that they use to tweet things that are going on in their lives at that moment. Twitter seems harmless, but is it really?

Twitter can be used as site to bully others, every Twitter user has seen it personally; people being called names and being harassed for no good enough reason. Fights have been started because someone felt the need to say something that could’ve been kept off of social media, and handled in person.

Twitter could be a harmless device if people knew how to handle it properly. Students get lectured about our twitter use almost everyday in school, and we think nothing of it. We think that never happens, and we say we will never do it; yet people still end up doing it.

It hurts to be called out on twitter. Everyone one of your peers and everyone who has a twitter has access to the tweet. Sometimes people call others out by name or they just “subtweet”, which is a tweet that is about them but it doesn’t say their name. When they tweet subtweets, they make sure that the person who it’s about knows it’s about them.

Tweeting mean things about people is not right. Maybe people think it is okay just because it’s on twitter, but the fact is, just because it’s on twitter doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt. It could hurt even worse because everyone can see it.

Tweets hurt just as bad as saying something to somebody in person. The only reason why it’s so much worse when it is on Twitter, is it’s out there for the whole world to see. The tweet is out there and even if you delete it, it can never be erased completely.

When sending a tweet out there like that, it doesn’t just hurt that person. It also makes it easier for others to join in on the bullying. People feel more comfortable tweeting back behind a phone than they do saying something in person. People can favorite the tweet and add more fire to the situation and think nothing of it because it’s simply a website.

Almost all of us can say we have been personally victimized on twitter, and we know that it doesn’t feel very good; so why must we help it continue going on by tweeting stuff ourselves or just by favoriting it? We can all just stop the Twitter drama and stop the bullying. If someone sees someone else being bullied, they shouldn’t feed into it. Ignoring it is all that is going to fix the situation. Just look the other way and eventually other people will too. Once you take away the bullies power, what do they have?
