Many mixed feelings of winter

By: Alex Coleman [Ads Editor]

The air swirls around students entering and exiting the school, nipping at their exposed skin. The wind blows, tousling hair and articles of clothing. Heavy droplets of white, powdery wonder fall, landing secretly in people hair and on their clothing. That’s right, it’s snowing. November 11th and it’s one of the first snows of many to come. Many students here at MHS have noticed the fluffy white cascading outside their classroom windows. Photos of this white fluff will be on every social media site within minutes, and many people will begin openly sharing their thought on this rather wet substance; but what are the students really thinking?

Sheala Rael, sophomore, was filled with excitement at the sight of the small white droplets. “I love snow, it’s just so pretty and fluffy and fun to mess around in,” said Rael. For many people snow is a reminder that the Christmas holiday is right around the corner, with only 44 days left until that magical time of the year, the snow is a welcoming sight. “It gets me in the holiday spirit,” Rael commented, “I’m excited for Christmas, and if it’s not going to be white outside then I’m going to be very upset. When I think of Christmas I think of white, waking up in the morning and seeing the snow. It’s the best part.” Although Sheala and many other students enjoy the cold precipitation, not everyone shares their enthusiasm.

Jenna Floyd, junior, cannot stand even the thought of this substance settling on the ground. “I absolutely despise snow,” Jenna explained, “It’s cold and wet and gross and it makes me feel like sickness and disease is coming.” Although Floyd isn’t thrilled by the thought of this crunchy mush underneath her feet, it does remind her that a beloved holiday is approaching fast. “I’m always excited for Christmas, but if it could be without snow it would be even better.”

Although there are many mixed feelings about snow, it generally tends to be enjoyable in one way or another. Whether it’s going outside to ski, sled, or snowboard, or whether it’s staying inside, cuddled up with a good cup of hot chocolate, snow seems to spread joy even to those who claim to dislike it. So go outside, embrace the fact that powder is falling and sticking, drive safely, and try to enjoy the upcoming winter experience.
