Sacrificing for Lent

By: Haley Shaffer [Social Media Editor]

Today marks the first day of Lent for the people who are a part of the Christian faith. Lent is the forty days before Easter when some Christians give up, or attempt to give up, something important to them. The point of Lent is to sacrifice because Jesus sacrificed for everyone on Easter, when he died on the cross. Some people choose not to participate in Lent because they are not strong enough to give something up for that long. Others however, go all in and give up their phones or swearing. And some people, are right there in between.
Haley Clifton, sophomore, is giving up something that she says means a lot to her, chocolate. “I’m giving up chocolate because I know it will be a challenge and I’ve never given up something that hard before,” Haley said. Haley has been participating in Lent ever since she was born. She said that the first time she ever gave something up was when she was ten. “I gave up pop,” she said. Lent is something that is really important to Haley because she takes her religion very seriously. “It’s a big deal to me because it’s a big part of the Catholic religion,” Haley said. Haley also has Ash Wednesday traditions. “I go to Ash Wednesday service twice. First time is at 7:30 a.m. and then again at 8:30 p.m.,” Haley said. Haley says that she enjoys her mass services at Saint Joseph church.
Today is the day that Haley has to make the commitment to not eat chocolate for forty days. Hopefully she will be able to stay away from this tempting treat for five and half weeks. Either way she will remember the reason she is doing this and each day will help make her faith in her religion a little stronger.
