Thrift store chic

By: Alex Estes [Co-Yearbook Editor]

High-waisted pants. Sixties prints. Platform shoes. Vintage band tees. The future in fashion is here, and it turns out it is from the past. More and more people are starting to look for their next big statement item on Goodwill’s clothing racks, instead of shopping for cliche clothes in big brand department stores.
It’s cool to have clothes that have a story behind them, and most times, it’s a lot cheaper, too. Thrift stores offer a huge variety of clothing at affordable prices. A stark contrast to popular department stores that offer the same clothes that everyone else already has, at stupidly high prices. If money is an issue, and clothes are needed, thrift stores are the way to go.
Thrift stores are awesome when searching for a one of a kind piece of clothing. It’s a lot of work when actually searching though, but most thrifted clothes have a history that doesn’t start in a sweatshop in China. Most vintage clothing is made in America, which makes it unique in itself. It is also fun to have clothes that no one else has.
Even though its difficult to search through the hundreds of clothes that are waiting to be bought on thrift store racks, thrifting pays off! It doesn’t mean that everything needs to bought from thrift stores from now on, but it is cheaper. When looking for shorts, instead of paying $30 for a pair, go to Goodwill and buy a pair of jeans to hack off into shorts. They are normally about $20 to $25 dollars cheaper, and are completely customizable.
When looking for cheap, but cool clothes, thrift shops are the way to go. They offer a huge variety compared to the popular department stores. And don’t worry, the smell will wear off soon!
Thrifting for clothes is a cheaper option, and sometimes vintage clothes are a lot cooler than name brand.
