She wakes up in the morning and looks outside. She sees the sunshine and hears the birds chirping. She gets excited. Could it be shorts weather already? As she checks the days temperature high, she gets out her favorite pair of jean shorts. As she walks out the door to go to school she is excited to see what other people may be wearing on this beautiful day in March.
“[People should start wearing shorts] when the weather gets warmer”, says Abby Kolarik, a freshman at Marion High School. “[They should start at] the end of March.” agrees Mickenzie Kack. Many people agree that people should wait to wear shorts. In the early months of the spring, when the weather is still chilly and is not constant, wearing shorts can be very precarious. Especially in Iowa, March and April can either be warm and nice or cold and rainy. So what is the right temperature for wearing shorts? In Mickenzie’s opinion the 60’s is a good temperature. Abby says that the 60’s to 70’s is the right temperature for shorts weather. Wearing shorts could be a good decision but it could also leave you very cold.
“[There is a difference for boys and girls] because boys wear longer shorts,” Mickenzie states. The truth is that boy shorts are normally longer than girl shorts. So the social norm is that it is not as weird when boys begin wearing shorts in the early spring months when the weather is still chilly, but when a girl does it becomes the talk of the school. Girls tend to wear short jean shorts and short athletic shorts, but is there a difference in these two different types of shorts? “[There is a difference] because athletic shorts you can wear during cooler temperatures.” Abby explains.
She gets to school and sees that some people are wearing shorts, some capris and some jeans. She passes some people in the hall and hears them saying that people shouldn’t be wearing shorts yet. She thinks to herself that it should be a personal choice when someone starts wearing shorts. If someone doesn’t want to wear shorts they don’t have to, but don’t judge those who do decide to wear shorts.
