She wakes up on Monday morning and remembers that this week is spirit week at Marion High School. She tries to remember what today’s theme is and is elated when she remembers it is PJ day today. She finishes getting ready, stays in her pajamas, puts on her slippers and heads for school. She can’t wait to see everyone showing their school spirit by wearing their pajamas today and what they will wear the other days this week.
Allie LeGrand is a freshman on the JV cheer team. She and all the other cheerleaders are required by their coaches to participate in spirit week. The cheerleaders pick the theme of each day and make signs and banners that they post around the school advertising them. Allie enjoys being a cheerleader and showing her school spirit by participating in spirit week.
“[My favorite day is] Pajama Day because I like to be comfortable and that is a comfortable day,” Allie explains. Pajama day seems to be one of the most popular days among the students of MHS. A lot of people participate in pajama day because they like to wear their pajamas to school. Some popular styles of pajamas are sweatpants or yoga pants and a T-shirt because of ease and comfort and a lot of students also wear footed pajamas that zip all the way up the front. But pajama day isn’t the only fun day during spirit week. On Tuesday the theme is tie-dye or neon day, Wednesday is twin day, Thursday’s theme is black and white day and Friday is always Red and Gold day.
“[My least favorite day is] twin day,” Allie says, “because I don’t like to coordinate outfits.” Although Allie may not like twin day, many others do. They like to coordinate with their friends and wear matching outfits. A lot of people make matching T-shirts with duct tape, puff paint and iron-on letters. But the one down fall of twin day is not everyone finds a twin. But one way to solve that is to join a group of people who are all ready twins and become triplets.
“[Spirit week during] Homecoming week is better than WPA week because more people participate,” Allie states. The reason behind this is probably because Homecoming seems a lot more popular than WPA. But the reason we have spirit week in the winter is to support the basketball players and the other winter sports. Whether it is in the fall or the winter it is just as fun and everyone should show their school spirit.
Allie leaves school on Friday, watching the sea of gold and red leaving the gym after the pep rally. Allie goes home to get ready to cheer at the game later that night. She can’t wait to see all of the students in their red and gold at the game.
