Many people have great memories from the Marion pool, whether it’s hanging with friends, playing Marco Polo, or simply being a kid and having a good time. It is filled with an unlimited amount of nostalgia for many. So, is the remodel a new and exciting chapter or a demolishing of cherished memories? This new design is going to consist of updates that will benefit the community and spark interest in all ages, unlike the current pool which only has a small pool, a bigger pool with two diving boards, and a run-down splash pad.
The Marion pool is a great community-engaging environment, but it’s been ready for an update after almost 40 years of its service. The people have started to outgrow the pool. The Park and Recreation director, Seth Staashelm, responded by asking the community what they wanted and how he could improve the area. They posted a survey in an open house on Jan. 13, and over the course of a week, received 831 responses. Many requested new playgrounds and splash pads, but ultimately, the community wanted a bigger park in the neighborhood to replace the pool. said Staashelm. He expressed how the project is based on what the people want and how pleasing the community is the main goal. So, Staashelm and his team wasted no time with the new design.
The new Marion pool will be located on the south side of town on 31st. Staashelm said, “We are purchasing 24 acres to put a new aquatic center that will feature a lap pool, diving well, leisure pool that will go from 0-3 (ft), a wave pool, and also a lazy river.” According to the City of Marion website, the new area will also include bigger slides, an obstacle course, and diving platforms. The new aquatic center will hopefully attract more popularity, excitement, and interest. But the construction for this place can’t kick off just yet. Until the vote held in November passes for the funding of this project, they can’t move forward with the renovation. The construction is predicted to begin in 2026 or 2027. But what inspired this project one might ask? Staashelm said that an old project called, Imagine Next in 2018 resurfaced the Willowood Aquatic Center remodel. They shared four main ideas to help improve the area and community, and one of the items on that list was renovating the Marion pool.
If one loves the pool in its current condition, there is no need to be sad about its final months because the new and exciting aquatic center offers so much more. If the vote is passed by November, construction will begin, and one can be ready to jump right in. What started as a forgotten idea by the neighborhood six years ago will hopefully make a big splash in town in the next year or two.
