Almost every individual in the world has social media and scrolls for hours each day, either watching entertaining videos, seeing photos from family or friends, or even finding inspiration from current phenomena. New styles seem to appear every day on various apps and platforms, and people just love them. For example, a new shoe could be the trend at the moment, and it seems that everyone must have that same pair in their hands. Trends will always be everywhere, but are some of them getting overused?
New and old fads alike resurface all over the internet and break their way into people’s lives. Kinzie Strader, senior, explains that social media has influenced and changed her style many times. “I have seen a lot of fashion trends like the popular Adidas shoes or even prints like cheetah. I am really into those, but I feel like at times it can be a lot and feel like it’s starting to fall off more,” said Strader. One day a trend can be the biggest and best thing one can follow, the next it could be forgotten like that. Ash Wasek, senior, said, “Social media opens my eyes to different ways to dress, but I like to put my flair on it. It also educates me on certain topics that truly influence my opinion, though I don’t think it has changed my style. It introduced me to my style when I had none.” Every person finds the style they enjoy online, but it can seem like it’s what the whole world likes and partakes in. Strader said, “I think overused trends happen when people continue using the same one so much that it quickly falls off. I think there are a bunch of micro trends that tend to be short-lived and can easily get overused. For a while, bows were very trendy, but I feel like now this is overused and people should move on from it.” Something could get posted or worn so much that it makes it disappear. Not everyone wants to be wearing the same styles all the time. However, that doesn’t mean all trends are bad and overused. Wasek said, “I think because of social media, many people have been exposed to different types of fashion. Are there some groups of people that follow the same styles? Of course, but there is still so much variety in each style.” Social media truly is where a lot of people get their sense of fashion these days, but how does it truly inspire people?
When one opens a social media app, hundreds and thousands of videos or pictures are posted for people to view. Recently, one of the most popular items on these platforms is people showing the outfits they are wearing for their day or night. Strader said, “Online, one can look at people’s feeds and many influencers post hauls and brand deals when they are showing off clothes or products that brands sent them to talk about.” Every day, people can find easy inspiration from people posting about their new obsession. The influencers of social media truly are the biggest help in creating a trend. It’s easy to be convinced to purchase or try something when one’s favorite person is posting about it, especially if they have a large platform.
Trends are ever-changing, however, they truly are just fads. They are the world’s biggest deal for a little while then they fizzle out. And then onto the next. The cycle will continue for as long as society knows. New crazes are brought into the world every day, though that doesn’t mean it will influence everyone. Who knows what the next big thing will be, but soon the whole world will know about it.
