She mentally prepares for the game as she arrives on the bus. She walks through the doors and her emotions kick in. She gets suited up for the game that will start her high school career, this girl is Mackenzie Redmond.
Mackenzie Redmond is a freshman who plays a very unique role. Since the numbers for the girls basketball team were on the shorter side, there is no freshman team. Instead, Redmond and other freshman play huge roles on the JV team. With the first regular season game just being finished, Redmond can finally sum it up. “I was honestly very nervous being a freshman and having to play JV,” said Redmond. Last night the girls had their first game against the Western Dubuque bobcats, taking home a win. “We’re really tight as a team because we’re always there to pick each other up. The coach’s also play a huge role in that,” Redmond commented. The girls will have the Maquoketa Cardinals next on the list, playing at home.

This is a topic that many are talking about – the lack of numbers in basketball, particularly the girls basketball program – this is two years in a row that there aren’t enough girls to field a freshmen team, because the few that are out, are some of the best talent and are playing at the varsity level, leaving the others to play at the JV level rather than the true freshman level. I don’t know if it’s just a trend, or if it is becoming the common practice. I would like to see the PowWow articles developed a little more from everyone. There’s more to this story.
