If there were any more rules associated with the Media Center, a student would need to consult his or her attorney before entering. Could there possibly be any more restrictions? The list of items banned is extraneous and impossible to enforce: no bags, no food, no drinks, no cell phones. Furthermore, the banal procedure of asking for a pass is flawed; if one is asked for a pass, the automatic response of “open block” is sufficient in over riding this otherwise criminal offense. To be upset with the staff is misdirected; instead, we should encourage their having taken initiative in enforcing more rules. It’s entirely possible that there was a situation to spark each rule made, such as students stealing books by placing them in their bags, staining books and ruining computers from food, and cheating on a test by using their cell phone. However, a single (or even several) instance of one of these rare offenses isn’t enough to justify the lock down we’re witnessing. While the rules, in theory, make a decent amount of sense, there are far too many of them. As a group we need to get our act together and prove ourselves to the media center staff. In time, perhaps high school generations yet to come will be able to check their grades without bracing the inevitable onslaught of interrogations.
