The Epstein Files regarding the wealthy financier, Jeffrey Epstein, have been a notorious topic in recent months, and the people who are rumored to be involved have been receiving immense amounts of backlash with no sign of stopping. One group that faced a wave of scrutiny was the popular photography company Lifetouch, which was known for the respected work of capturing children’s smiles for years. The photos they take can say so much; a picture is worth a thousand words. What if those images truly did fall into the hands of someone like Jeffrey Epstein?
The financier has been popularized once more, but this time, something is different. Fewer citizens are feeling sympathy for the victims and are, more so, glamorizing Epstein. He was very wealthy, which brought him connections to very prominent figures; soon enough, he too became one of the notable influences he had always wanted to be. “With great power comes great responsibility,” and Epstein knew his power, which led him to take advantage of the influence he had on society to get away with many heinous crimes. He has been persecuted for multiple child trafficking charges, ultimately leading to his death while in prison. In February, a scary rumor detailing Lifetouch’s alleged presence in the files outraged communities. A company that was trusted by countless families all over the world is now associated with the notorious monster, Epstein. Anyone’s child could be in the files, with no way of knowing how they were exploited, shared, or who was involved. What was done to their likeness?
In 2019, Apollo Global became the parent company of Lifetouch. According to a conversation with a Lifetouch Representative, Leon Black, CEO of Apollo Global, had direct ties to Epstein, as they had done business together in the past. In 2021, Black stepped down as CEO and chairman. Ken Murphy, Lifetouch’s CEO, made a public statement on all of the rumors surrounding his company, saying, “Funds managed by subsidiaries of Apollo Global Management are investors in Shutterfly, the parent company of Lifetouch, and therefore no one employed by Apollo has ever had access to any student images. Lifetouch is not named in the Epstein files. The documents contain no allegations that Lifetouch itself was involved in, or that any student photos were used in, any illicit activities.” Murphy added that, “When Lifetouch photographers take your students’ picture, that image is safeguarded for families and schools only, with no exceptions.” While the claims of the company being in the files are false, many schools still severed ties with Lifetouch.

When topics like this come up, it must be taken as seriously as possible—especially when Epstein is thrown in the mix, as he was an outright abuser. This isn’t a claim about him—it’s a known fact. He was a god-awful human, and with that in mind, it was a no-brainer that people were quick to spew criticism. This was not just an issue surrounding Epstein; this was a possible threat to the safety of minors. If he had gotten his hands on the photos, one can only assume they would be used for atrocious and deplorable acts. It’s important not to take everything at face value, as the storyline is still being sorted out. Hearing something and automatically running with it can be so harmful, considering most individuals don’t care to dive further and do their own research. AI has only made this issue even bigger. There have been thousands of fake AI-generated images of Epstein and young girls doing various activities. While there are many real images in the Files, just like the generated ones, the children in the real photos are blurred out or redacted. Many people already aren’t taking the Files seriously, and AI just makes this worse.
In today’s society, AI and social media can lead to the quick spread of the false information virus. Receiving backlash from a situation they are not involved in can be very detrimental to a company. Due to Lifetouch being a popular school photo company, they are a valuable ingredient to be thrown into a perfect concoction of misinformation. So the next time someone thinks about sharing something, it is important that they make sure it’s actually factual, and not just speculation or rumors; nothing positive will ever come from spreading false information.
