From a dirt hill to a sparkling new skating loop, Marion’s latest attraction is gliding in, bringing neighbors together for laughter and spins. The Ice Loop has just had its grand debut on Dec. 5, gathering countless families and friends for a joyous time sliding into the Christmas season. Though initially delayed due to inevitable winter storms, this attraction stood the test of time and did not disappoint. Opening night, the Central Plaza gleamed not only with the shimmer of the ice but with the gleam in newfound friends’ smiles.
This new seasonal activity includes ice skating, skate rentals, and community special events. Monday through Wednesday, citizens can relax and enjoy this amenity all day in addition to Thursday to Friday 5-10, Saturday noon to 10, and finally Sunday noon to 6 for no charge if they have their own skates because of the public skating hours. However, have no fear of not experiencing this great pleasure because of not having blades; the Ice Loop keeps ice skates available for public rent as well as hourly ice resurfacing, outdoor heaters, and concessions.
This attraction has also taken into account the issue of weather guidelines. Seth Staashelm, one of the leaders of this winter project and employee of the City of Marion, accounts for this problem. He says that, “Weather conditions around 55-59 degrees will open at sundown, 60-65 will result in the loop being closed for the day, and weather below 5 degrees will also result in closing.” Updates will be posted on both the Marion Parks and Recreation Facebook page and the website; the weather hotline will be available as well.
Staashelm also describes how admissions to the loop will work. Adults eighteen and older will pay up to five dollars for admission, with youth (five-17 years old) and children four years old and under will be able to skate for free. As one can see, this is a spectacular way for the whole family to band together and have some winter fun. Staashelm says, “The Ice Loop was designed to accommodate people of all ages.” Season punch passes will be available for those who expect to glide over the ice for many late days in the winter season; adults will pay the minimal amount of $32, and youth will pay $24 for the entire winter season that the Ice Loop will be running.
Allie Rodman, junior, started working at the skate shop located next to the Ice Loop on Dec. 12. She goes to the high school and figured that she would pick up a job somewhere near. She said, “We have been pretty busy so far; a lot of people have been interested in the Ice Loop.” Although the rink just opened, most people agree that it has been a much-needed addition to the square. The loop is especially stunning in the nighttime; Rodman said, “My favorite time to work is at night because of all the Square lights and families having fun.” Overall, Marion’s recent feature is proving to be the most beneficial for all.
The new addition of the Ice Loop will ultimately bring the diverse community of Marion together as a family and drum up sales for local small businesses. As people stop by the twinkling skating rink, they will also run into the numerous and magical shops in the town square. From employees to customers, the sparkle of the rink has not worn off.
