Growing up, becoming a future president or walking on the moon seemed like a distant dream, unable to be reached. In society today, being important feels unachievable. Everyone is scared of failure, and the fear prevents greatness. Chase the remarkable, dream the biggest of dreams.
Mayor Nick AbouAsally has achieved that greatness through hard work and dedication to his community. On May 7, AbouAssaly had the honor of introducing the new city plaza to Marion residents and the council. He is excited about what this means for Marion. “I think it’s an amazing space that makes Marion’s residents proud of where they live and makes a nice impression on visitors,” he said. The plaza is a beautiful space. As summer approaches, it will become the perfect time for beautiful flowers, and a nice space to sit after shopping in the square. Not only is this space perfect for events, but pictures, as well. This plaza is a great way to meet new people and truly feel like a community.
AbouAssaly made a promise to Marion residents to be honest, transparent, and a caring leader. He holds himself accountable and works hard to keep that promise: “I work to improve the lives of people and give them great opportunities and to build a city we’re all proud to call ‘home,” he said. The goal is to make Marion a safe place and a dependable city. He cares about the futures of every individual and makes the effort to see through his promises. Before the plaza was renovated, the space was underutilized; AbouAssaly saw the potential in that space early on. As one of the most visible places, he knew it was very important to the city; “I started laying the groundwork more than a decade ago,” he said. He used to send pictures of beautiful plazas from other cities around the world, waiting for an opportunity to change Marion’s. The derechos’ damage provided the chance needed.
The plaza will increase traffic in the area, however, no parking is better than empty spots. A committee has been formed to help with traffic flow and parking. This plaza will include a fountain you can play in, fire tables, a play structure, a refrigerated ice-skating loop, a large sculpture, nice bathrooms, and a community room in the newly enclosed depot. A lot of money was raised for this expenditure, with the mayor raising $822,000 for the cause. AbouAssaly is grateful to be mayor, caring about more than the title of the job. “It is an obligation to care about the well-being of the community and work collaboratively with people to make sure we are truly serving all people and giving them the opportunities they want for themselves and their families,” he said. Being mayor comes with challenges every day, but also rewarding experiences. He said, “The mayor is the biggest community cheerleader and driver of forward momentum and works to eliminate divisions by bringing people together around common goals,” he said. Whether the goal is bettering Marion or improving the life of a few people, no task is ever too little.
Hard work is the key to success; no dream is too big, no action too small, as long as one tries and gives it everything they have, the outcome will always be worth it. Life is only what one makes of it; put in the work, encourage others, and make positive change.
