Since the new “Snow White” live-action movie was announced, fans have been all over it. When the casting was released, most people were furious over how little it represented the original animated movie. This isn’t uncommon in today’s world, but some of the details are very strange.
When the first trailer was released, many got upset over the fact that Snow White wasn’t “white.” People were outraged by this fact because they believed that Snow White should be pale-skinned, delicate, and innocent. In the new movie, however, she is confident, determined, and tan.
In the original, whenever Snow White sang, her voice was angelic and sweet, creating the image of that innocent young girl. In the live-action, it’s the opposite. Rachel Zegler, the actress behind Snow White, was seen belting the songs in a strong voice and showing her emotions through her words. I don’t think it had a bad effect on the character or movie, but many disagree.
Zegler said in an interview, Stating that they were changing the image of Snow White completely, effectively altering the movie. She also called the prince a “stalker” stating, “The original cartoon came out in 1937 and very evidently so. There’s a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her… weird.” Yes that is weird, and yes it’s no longer 1937, but when we’re kids, we don’t see it like that, we see it as a form of true love and that our prince is out there waiting to save us. She also said that “The prince is not a priority anymore” and claims she has only ever watched the original movie once because it scared her.
If you’re going to be portraying a Disney princess, let alone a well-known, and first one, you should probably like the movie, have watched it more than once, and understand the storyline.
Zegler wasn’t the only one stirring up the controversy. Peter Dinklage, a very well-known and sophisticated actor with dwarfism, claims it is “hypocritical” to remake a movie about seven dwarfs living in a cave. Due to his commentary, many dwarf actors didn’t want to help represent this idea, which forced the directors to create CGI dwarfs for the final movie. The dwarfs looked fake, it’s no secret, but they looked and acted how they were supposed to. The only odd thing about this was that they were small, but were still bigger than an actual dwarf. Their faces were blown up, and it just looked like a toy.
Some other minor details were changed as well, including one of the main points of the story. Snow White is supposed to be saved by a prince but is actually saved by one of the few bandits that live in the woods. The evil queen is also a hot topic in some people’s reviews. Many claim that Gal Gadot, the actress playing the queen, should not have had a villain’s song, as it didn’t fit her singing voice well.
The movie was ultimately a box office failure. With all of the controversy surrounding the movie, many didn’t want to waste the money to see how bad it was. While I do think the movie definitely could have been better, and more representative of the original, it wasn’t that bad of a movie. People say that in general, they don’t like watching the live-action remakes, only because many of us grew up with the animated ones, and it just isn’t as good.
The movie just lacks that sense of imagination. While I do think it’s important to teach young children about independence and confidence, it’s not always a bad idea to show them that their person is out there for them, and sometimes, you do need a little help from someone.
