Reading is a globally ageless activity. Picture books are given to the youngest children, and many elders read until they can no longer hold a novel. Whether it’s a gripping fantasy story or relatable realistic fiction, there is a book for everyone. The Marion Public Library is a firm believer in this, and because of that, they are attempting to make reading a more available resource.
The Bookmobile is a recently developed library on wheels that was introduced at the end of December. Its purpose is to provide education and stories to the community. Darryn Gradhandt is the head of the program. He set up the vehicle, figured out the technology within it, set up routes, and also helps drive it. He explained his aspirations for the future of the initiative. He claims that anyone can use the Bookmobile as long as one has an existing library card. They also help people sign up for a card on the spot if needed. They currently possess print materials only, but they hope to add programming and, eventually, even some laptops for individuals to utilize if Wi-Fi or the internet may be a concern. This library on wheels is currently traveling to Thomas Park, Lowe Park, and Dupaco on Tuesdays and Thursdays, attempting to reach as many people as possible. Once the school year comes to an end, they are hoping to double the frequency of these stops. So far, it has been a successful venture with quite a few people enjoying it. said Granhandt. Regardless of age, being able to engage oneself in the novel they read is always a fun task.
As Marion continues to expand its horizons, the use of public transportation may be harder to access. The Bookmobile wants to help bring stories to those who may find it difficult to travel to the library. Gradhandt said, “The Bookmobile has a lot of advantages, you can obviously take it anywhere at any time, so we can get into some of the areas that aren’t serviced by a bus route.” Having access to books, especially as a young child, is pivotal to literacy development. Both nonfiction and fairy tales help kids learn more about the world around them as much as they do themselves. The mobile library helps adolescents find the guidance they need to reach the standard goals within schools. The hotspot that the Bookmobile uses can also be employed by the community to do research or fill out a job application. It can truly be utilized by the entire city.
It’s a well-known fact that a great deal of people dislike reading. And although this is true, that doesn’t make it unimportant. Vocabulary and comprehension will continue to be crucial skills especially as the world grows. The Marion Public Library has chosen to share its resources with Eastern Iowa to help bring people together to escape into an incredible novel.
