In today’s world, it has become more evident that people are easily influenced by social media. From simply peer-pressuring followers to elaborate marketing schemes, people are more susceptible to buying unneeded products now than ever before. Especially with the rise of TikTok shops and the continued use of Instagram’s market, there is now space for online shopping to be easier than ever.
The presence of social media and the way creators invent personas of themselves often create a safe space for their followers to believe and invest in what they say, whether it’s the truth or not. Caleb Houy, senior, chooses not to have social media and also believes people are easily influenced by these platforms. He said, “In some cases, people are too easily swayed by the creators they follow…and it takes a lot to take a step back.” It can be challenging not to jump on the latest trend, especially when one’s favorite social media personality tells them it is worth all the hype. However, one needs to realize that these influencers are more than likely being paid to give rave reviews on products. So, the likelihood that the item is actually worth whatever amount of money someone paid is not high.
In terms of social media platforms like TikTok, shopping is highly convenient but has its downsides. Paige Greene, junior, is an avid TikTok shop user. “I think I can be easily influenced by certain things because it’s easy… I’ll already be on TikTok then see things I can easily buy,” she said. But it’s not always the case in which what is ordered turns out to be accurate; for instance, Greene once ordered a hoodie that turned out to be a scam, and instead of receiving what she had ordered, she ended up with a plain navy shirt. It is very easy to be fooled online when there are fake reviews, deep-faked photos, and lies being spread within the ads. Examples like this are why being cautious about what one orders is important, not only to save money and a headache but also to know how to tell the difference between a scam and a real deal.
In the end, it is simply more convenient to take a step back from all retailers and reviews that cannot be trusted entirely. Houy said, “Find reputable sources…social media has become instant access, but the cover doesn’t always match the inside.” Houy also believes that going and supporting local businesses is the way to go, rather than taking chances online. There have been many scandals in which creators and product details have not been entirely truthful, and taking a step back provides a layer of protection against being deceived. Because while there can be good products and convenience that come from social media shops, it is essential to proceed with caution when purchasing something.
Taking the time to read reviews not from influencers, making sure that one is buying from a trusted source, and lastly just asking if one truly needs to buy the product may just be the thing that stops a person from being the fool that just got scammed out of their money for a TikTok shop couch.
