Everyone has their own cherished hobby. Whether it be collecting random knick-knacks, sports, writing, drawing, etc., people typically prefer to be continually involved with something. One common hobby among young adults and other adults alike is gardening. It is very entertaining to assist plant life in its growth over time, and can be useful for practical purposes also. A student at Marion High school has recently worked very hard to create a brand new club to practice this hobby that other students can enjoy.
Bonnie Morrison, senior, is the student founder of the new Marion High school Gardening Club that has its first meeting today at 3:15 p.m. Morrison has had this plan for awhile, but it was difficult to actually get it started. “Mrs. Pins and I got the idea and planned what was going on last year. Then we asked Semler, and he was already okay with it,” explained Morrison. She is pumped to see what the turnout is today with so many signatures on the Gardening Club sign up sheet. “[I’m excited for] seeing all the underclassmen get excited about it and hopefully contributing and learning,” Morrison expressed. The club has various goals that they would like to accomplish over the next few years.
There have been many discussions between Morrison and Mrs. Kayla Pins, family and consumer science teacher, about future plans for the Gardening Club. One goal includes putting their harvest to good use. “We plan to sell produce to the farmer’s market and lunch program,” commented Morrison. She has high hopes for the club’s future, though she won’t be involved with it much longer. “I think it’ll get people excited and open their eyes to new experiences and ways they can help the community,” Morrison voiced.
Morrison has a strong connection towards gardening. She wants other students to take home the knowledge they can get from Gardening Club. “[I hope] that it’ll continue to grow and teach more students about doing things in their community,” described Morrison. Along with the life skills that students can learn, there are also opportunities for volunteer hours towards any students’ silver cord over the summer. If students are interested in gardening, or want to try a fun new activity, this club would be just the group for them to join!
