Many of the students at MHS attend a college class through Kirkwood. These classes can include Comp I and II, Intro to Psychology, Oral Communications, and many others. Kirsten Way, junior, is in Intro to Psychology. This class takes place at 7 a.m, and is taught by Mr. Nordgren.
Way thinks this class is very easy. “Its a semester long, and throughout we take 12 quizzes after each chapter we read,” Way commented. She also said that they usually get homework once a week, and lecture or do demonstrations everyday in class. Way just completed a three-page paper, and has two more in the class.
Way thinks this class is worth taking because it’s easy and worth a college credit. However, she doesn’t think it helped prepare her for college. “Its too easy. We get a normal amount of homework that kids do in a day in high school, but have a week to complete it,” Way said. She also commented that they don’t take midterms. “This just isn’t how I picture college will be like,” Way explained. Way said she does plan on taking as many college classes as she can in the future through Marion.
College classes are a privilege Marion students get. Everyone gets the chance to get college credit for these classes for free. They are also a good way to prepare for college and see what it might be like.
