On Monday January 12, Marion began it’s journey towards becoming part of the blue zone schools. They added a new lunch choice for students and staff, in case they didn’t like the original menu for the day. This is all for the purpose of making Marion a healthier and happier place.
Marty Shaffer, one of the lunch providers at Marion High School, is a big fan of the new salad bar. “It’s an extra option for kids for lunch if they don’t like the regular menu,” Shaffer stated. The bar gives the students a chance to choose what they want whether it be a personal pan pizza or a green salad with their favorite toppings.
Although the salad bar takes up one side of the serving area and forces the regular line to lengthen, it is a great way to make the students and staff healthier. It also pushes Marion a lot closer to becoming part of the Blue Zones, a health organization. “We’re trying to get into the Blue Zones and this is one way to get into it,” added Shaffer.
The bar has many options for students to choose from. “We’re really restricted by government regulations, but we have everything out there that we can to be open for Blue Zones while staying within the regulations. There may be some small changes in the future but right now we’re happy where we are,” Shaffer said. The new salad bar is a great way for students and staff to become healthy individuals and help the school make it into the blue zones.
