Straying away from the norm of society is hard enough, trying to come out as a lesbian in high school is even harder. Kids will pick on the LGBT community for only being a little different. Trying to fit in during high school is difficult enough. On top of that, having something that separates you from the everyday crowd is even more challenging.
Breea Kiefer, sophomore, was brave enough to come out. “I have always been a lesbian, I just have always had an interest in girls. I never really had an interest in guys,” Kiefer commented. Because Kiefer is a lesbian, there is some backlash.
Students find it difficult to deal with anything different from what they know, so they can and will make fun. Kiefer has been picked on for being a lesbian, but she doesn’t let anyone bring her down. “Some girls tweet about me and my girlfriend, and people talk about us behind our back, but we ignore it,” Kiefer stated. Bullies try to pick on people who are weak, Kiefer isn’t weak and she stands up for what makes her happy. “We don’t care, we’re happy together,” Kiefer added.
Most of Kiefer’s friends are gay. They all support her and they’re happy because she’s happy. Kiefer’s family also supports her, “My parents know I’m gay. They support me since a lot of my relatives are gay also,” Breea explained. There has always been a controversial theory that if someone grows up around gays, that they will also be gay. The argument didn’t seem to bother Kiefer in the slightest, the only thing she cares about is her own feelings. “The debate doesn’t really concern me, all I know is that I am happy, and thats that.” Kiefer commented.
Although some students aren’t accustomed to seeing gay and lesbian couples in the hallway, Kiefer is committed to her relationship, regardless of the thoughts of others.
