Every student at Marion walks through the main doors each morning, a long day of classes and a long night of homework sure to follow. Now, stepping through that doorway, students are greeted with the sight of construction, the sound of hammers and drills, and the acrid smell of paint. A new addition at Marion High School is being added, a bigger, better office space. Mr. Zrudsky, Vice Principal, gave a brief insight into what this expansion truly is. “It’s an expansion of the office, the new part is where the secretary’s will be, the old part will be turned into a conference meeting area which we are lacking at the moment,” Zrudsky commented. This new space will offer much help for the people in the office, “Whenever someone comes to for a meeting, Mr. Semler or myself get kicked out of our offices while it’s going on, so it’ll be nice to have the space,” Zrudsky said, “also visibility will be better, we’ll be able to see who’s coming in and they’ll be able to find the office easier.” While all of this may be true, students have some very mixed opinions about this new update to the school.
Camryn Cannoy, freshman, likes the idea of the added visibility. “I think it’s a good idea, you can see who’s walking in and it’s safer for us students,” said Cannoy. Now, it’s a common fact that Marion doesn’t have a ton of money to spend, so this new addition has raised some questions from students. “I’m not feeling too good about the cost of the update,” commented Camryn, “we could be getting new stuff for the school instead, like gym stuff or something.” Though Camryn likes the idea of the renovation, she does agree with other students in that the construction is annoying. “It’s a nuisance, there’s so much already going on and they should’ve done this during the summer,” Camryn said, “They’re always making noise and the smell of paint is really gross.” Though most would agree that the unsightly construction is distracting, not everyone agrees with Camryn in that this new edition is a good idea.
Chloe Mallon, freshman, is not fond of this idea at all. “I think it’s a bad idea, I can’t walk through there and have to go around it now,” said Mallon, “it distracts me and the smell of paint during lunch is disgusting.” Chloe has a few ideas of where they could be putting their money instead. “It should be put towards more useful things, new choir stuff or uniforms for Volleyball and other sports,” Chloe commented. Whether the idea of the new space appeals to the students or not, it will be more helpful in the long run. Easier access to the office, better security, and a better experience for visitors and guests is some things that are promised with this expansion.
