When asked who the most important person in a high school environment is, a lot of the time the one person who really is the most important is over-looked. Anne Grant has been the Marion High School counselor for twenty-five years, and loves every part of her job. Helping kids get through tough times in their lives is her favorite part. She believes that no one should go through life feeling invisible. “Everyone is uniquely different and so special,” Grant explained, “We’re each others treasures, and need to be told that we’re wonderful.”
She became a counselor because she wanted to give people someone to talk to. Like most teenagers, Grant also went through tough times in her life and wants to make sure that no one ever has to go through the same thing. “Kids come first in my job,” Grant commented. She even drove a student to their house because they were having problems with their car. She has helped tons of kids during her time as a high school counselor, and plans to continue for a long time.
The only thing Grant doesn’t enjoy all that much is paperwork. Part of her job is creating schedules for the students, and changing them later. She even finds out old grades for students that came from a different school. “I don’t mind paperwork that much, but it isn’t my favorite part about the job,” Grant said. She would rather be helping student through emotional times in their life then deciding their next class.
